CoB 2nds     0          Edgbaston 7s   5

CoB 2nds opened their home league programme against Edgbaston 7s. With the team not yet back up full strength it proved to be a difficult afternoon, in spite of some spirited endeavour. With both teams taking a little time to settle into their game, it was then Edgbaston who had the first, albeit unsuccessful, attempt on goal.

CoB began to create their own chances with Jordan, Stan and Ian among those working hard to push forward. Stan had a good shot on goal that went just wide. Sean was lively in his runs along the wings. With everyone working hard to create good forward momentum, the balance of play was fairly even with the visitors pushing forward too, but they found the home defence pretty resolute in keeping them at bay. Both full backs, Edan and Matthew were tackling well and Jack, in goal, was clearing well with some positive kicking.

Edgbaston forced a series of short corners but were unable to make them count. Jack coming to the rescue several times. Jordan continued to impress with his work in defence and backing up the forwards.

Both teams continued to push on whenever possible but at the break it was honours even at 0-0. CoB had worked hard to keep on terms with their lively visitors.

The visitors began the second half well and enjoyed the better of the early pressure. It was not long before Edgbaston used a ‘long corner’ to create a chance that lea to them opening the scoring. CoB worked hard to get back into the game, but suffered a set-back when Stan set off on a surging run towards the, his momentum took him colliding into a defender and leaving him needing some time on the side-line.

Edgbaston gradually put in a spell of sustained-possession which led to two more goals in fairly quick time. CoB lost heart a little and began to fade out of the game. Two more goals from short corners, the final one right on the final whistle, gave the visitors a comfortable win in the end.

CoB were good in parts, with some good team-work at times, but must work equally hard in both halves of the game. No-one played badly, but a few put in a stronger shift than others!

Next week’s game is at home again against Kings Heath Pickwick.
