Match Report | Yardley’s nightmare season continued in their fourth encounter with the league leaders in the Warwick Printing MRHA Hockey League, West Midlands 1. A cold, wet and windy afternoon did little to encourage an enjoyable spectacle. However, the visitors settled into their stride right from the start and raced into an early two-goal lead. The first from a short corner and the second from a fortunate deflection in the D from a hit outside, giving the keeper no chance. Although Yardley tired hard to get into their game it was Wolverhampton who added to their lead from a somewhat scrambled effort that was not cleared by the defence. The Wolves seemed to take their foot off the pedal for a while allowing Yardley to create a few more chances of their own. However, a fourth, from a short corner just before half time gave Wolves a comfortable lead at the break. The second half was largely more of the same with Wolverhampton a calling all the shots and adding more goals, mainly from their well-drilled short corner routines. Apart from a few impressive solo runs forward by skipper Zach Jarvis, Yardley, not surprisingly, wilted under the constant pressure and in the end were relieved to have kept the score to single digits. Four heavy defeats against the league leaders has not added to any enjoyment to this season and just maybe Yardley will be looking forward to the approaching Open League, promised for next season. This week it does not get any easier with a visit to Leamington, second in the league at present. |
