So the final game of the season for the Badgers arrived and has now duly passed. A resounding 3-0 win to round off what has for the most part been a very successful and enjoyable season.
A strong Yardley team took on an Evesham team who were weaker than expected (when we played at Evesham, they had a large and powerful team capable of winning more games in this league than losing). All credit to our opposition for fulfilling the fixture with a 53 year old débutante (who also used to be my next door neighbour and fellow cricketer for more years than we would care to think about). It is always the easy option to call these games off and I’m glad they showed some perseverance to get a team together. The 2nd team know how frustrating cancelled games are and this demonstrates the benefits of league hockey.
Yardley dominated the game from start to finish and but for some heroics by the young Evesham keeper the score-line would have looked far worse. Our first goal came from Ubaydah with a sweep shot into the corner. The 2nd came from a short corner which went wrong and Usamah picked up the ball, jigged past 2 defenders before again sweeping into the net at the far post. The third was a maiden goal for Ross Stanley poaching in the D, it was very nearly pinched by Muhammed running in at the far post but it was definitely Ross’ goal.
What a thoroughly enjoyable way to end a season of league hockey. We are set to lose some players from the Badgers next year with Usamah and Ishaq rolling over to U17 for next season. Otherwise the squad remains intact and with some additional support could again do well next season.
