Match Report | After their first league win the previous week, Yardley could hardly realistically hope for the same again against the league leaders in the Warwick Printing Hockey League, West Midlands Division 1 . The visitors could not have had a more unfortunate start to the game when both their goalkeeper and umpire were held up in traffic and only arrived as the game was about to start. When Yardley’s keeper and umpire finally joined the game after a few minutes the scores remained level. Old Wulfs then got into their stride immediately and soon edged ahead albeit with a rather scrappy goal. Yardley too got their game going and managed to get back on level terms when Munib Altaf scored from close in. The home-side scored two more goals before half time but Yardley also missed a good chance to pull another one back before the break. Old Wulfs seemed to step up a gear early in the second half forcing Yardley’s keeper Neal Makepeace into some fine saves before a flurry of goals put the game beyond doubt. An injury to Yardley’s Alex Makepeace forced some positional changes and from a rare Yardley short corner Alex finished off a good effort on goal by skipper Zach Jarvis. Then right on full time Alex Makepeace collected a hopeful clearance up-field and beat a defender before slotting home into the left hand corner to make the final score a little more respectful. Although well beaten by the league leaders, Yardley did gain some consolation in that apart from another promotion hopeful side they had scored more goals against Old Wulfs than anyone else this season. This week Yardley will fancy their chances at home against fellow strugglers, Barlaston. Scorers: Alex Makepeace 2, Munib Altaf |
